SALARY: Starting Recruit at $36,816.78 per year, plus benefits. With an approximately 10.5% increase after successful completion of the first year of probation (completes IFSAC FF1 AND NREMT). If the candidate has IFSAC FF1 and NREMT or higher, STARTING PAY IS $40,660.62 per year, plus benefits.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Under direct supervision of the paid Line Officer and other District Officers, the Firefighter’s duties include, but are not limited to responding to medical calls and fire alarms; performing medical care on persons at the level of Emergency Medical Responder; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and carry patients from remote and obscure locations. Using skills learned from Firefighter I training, Firefighters will assist in fire prevention, fire suppression, public education, fire equipment/apparatus maintenance, and fire station upkeep. LFPD Firefighters are required to obtain Firefighter I Certification and Emergency Medical Responder Certification within the first year of service and to attend all required training.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully the individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Individuals must complete an LFPD background investigation, written test, state firefighters pension physical agility test, oral interview, drug test, and pension physician’s physical.
PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE: Some experience working with a fire department, EMS, and the public is desirable. Firefighter I Certification and Emergency Medical Responder License preferred.
BACKGROUND, SPECIAL TRAINING, AND SKILLS: Possess a valid State of Oklahoma driver’s license; no felony convictions or criminal record; U.S. citizen; Oklahoma resident; over the age of 18. Individuals must be able to demonstrate the physical ability to perform the duties of a Firefighter.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent.
STATE FIREFIGHTERS PENSION AGE LIMIT: Must be under the age of 45 on employment start date to get into the state firefighter’s pension system.
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST:
1. Run 1 1/2 miles within 13 minutes.
2. The Candidate shall perform 35 bent-knee sit-ups within 2 minutes.
3. Flexed arm hang-minimum time: 8 seconds (palms away)
4. The candidate, be given a beam secured to a level floor and measuring 20 ft. (6m) long by 3 to 4 in. (76 to 102mm) wide and given a length of fire hose weighing at least 20 lb. (9 kg.), shall walk the length of the beam, carrying the length of hose, without falling off, or stepping off the beam.
5. The candidate, given a weight of 125 lb. (57 kg.) shall lift the weight from the floor and carry the weight 100 ft. (305m) without stopping.
6. The candidate, starting from an erect position with feet apart, the distance approximately shoulder width, shall move a 15 lb (7kg.) weight in the following manner: bend over, grasp the weight with both hands while it is at a point on the floor between the feet, and lift weight to waist level, then place the weight on the floor approximately 12 in. (305 mm) outside the right foot. The weight shall then be moved alternately in the fashion from left foot to waist level, to right; right to waist level to left until it has been moved 7 times in each direction with the total horizontal distance of travel being at least 21 in. (610 mm) more than the space between the feet for each of the 14 moves. This shall be done in less than 35 seconds.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands and work environments described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
An employee must regularly be required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear, use hands to handle, or feel. Also regularly must be able to bend, stoop, twist, and reach with hands and arms.
An employee may be asked regularly to lift 50 pounds. Vision requirements are close, distance and color vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees may be expected to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather on emergency scenes. At emergency scenes, the employee may be required to lift persons and objects over 100 lbs. Employees at emergency scenes will be required to work at excessive heights via the use of ladders or lifting devices and will be exposed to excessive heat, cold, wet, and hazardous situations.
