How to Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter

Become a Volunteer FirefighterLimestone Fire Protection District (LFPD) accepts applications for Volunteer Firefighters on a year-round basis; however, periods for application review, interviewing, and volunteer position offers are held twice annually in January and July.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age at appointment.
  • Applicants must successfully complete an LFPD background investigation and oral interview.
  • Individuals should be in good physical health.
  • Should be able to complete 12 hours of shift staffing per month.
  • Be able to Attend at least 50% of regularly scheduled training drills per quarter, and be active on calls.
  • Recruit volunteer firefighters will be given and must pass a three-month exam that will affirm or disqualify them as a member of the District.
  • Recruit volunteer firefighters must complete NIMS 100,200,700,800 and TIMS in the first 6 months or they will be terminated.
  • Must posess or complete an Oklahoma state EMS license of EMR or higher in the first 12 months.
  • Must  posess or take and complete an IFSAC FF1 class and recieve the certification 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Under direct supervision of the Line Officer and Chief Officers, the Firefighter’s duties include, but are not limited to: responding to medical calls and fire alarms; perform medical care on persons at the level of Emergency Medical Responder; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and carry patients from remote and obscure locations. Using skills learned from Firefighter-I training, Firefighters will assist in fire prevention, fire suppression, public education, fire equipment/apparatus maintenance, and fire station upkeep. LFPD Firefighters are required to obtain Firefighter I Certification and Emergency Medical Responder Certification within the first year of service, and to attend all required training.

PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE: Some experience working with a fire department, EMS, and with the public is preferred, but not required.

BACKGROUND, SPECIAL TRAINING, AND SKILLS: Possess a valid State of Oklahoma driver’s license; no felony convictions, criminal record, or pending court cases; U.S. citizen; Oklahoma resident. Individual must be able to demonstrate the physical ability to perform the duties of a Firefighter.

EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands and work environments described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. – Employees will regularly be required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Also, regularly must be able to bend, stoop, twist, and reach with hands and arms. – An employee will be asked on a regular basis to lift up to 50 pounds. – Vision requirements are close, distance and color vision, peripheral and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. – Employees will be expected to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather on emergency scenes. – At emergency scenes the employee may be required to lift persons and objects in excess of 100 lbs. – Employees at emergency scenes will be required to work at excessive heights via the use of ladders or lifting devices and will be exposed to excessive heat, cold, wet, and hazardous situations.

TRAINING: Volunteer Firefighters will receive specialized training, including practical hands-on experience and classroom-style lectures covering relevant topics.

BENEFITS: Volunteers are compensated by a stipend program, which includes Staffing, calls and training classes. The firefighters are also in the Oklahoma State Firefighters Pension and Retirement System, If the requirements are met for entrance into the system by the volunteer.
